How long to season firewood

Wondering how long it takes to season firewood yourself? Here’s a quick overview:

Hardwood usually needs between 12 and 24 months to dry, while softwood typically takes about 6 to 12 months. Still, it’s always a good idea to check the moisture levels have reached 20% or less to ensure you’re achieving the most efficient, clean and hottest burn from your logs.

Unseasoned Firewood Stacking Guide

Here are our top tips to level up your wood stacking skills for optimal firewood seasoning:

  • Place logs in a log store: a purpose-built log store is the best place to season your firewood. Position your log store in direct sunlight (ideally south-facing), ensuring it has good airflow and is easily accessible. Most log stores are open at the front, have a slanted roof, and come with a raised floor to keep your logs off the ground.
  • Protect from the elements: To shield your logs from rain, snow, and ice, use a weatherproof firewood cover or a sheet of tarpaulin. However, when the weather is dry and sunny, remove the cover to allow ample ventilation around your logs. This prevents them from sweating and helps to optimise drying time.
  • Select the right location: While it’s important to store logs with plenty of sunlight with good airflow, avoid placing them in areas exposed to excessive wind that could blow in rain. Carefully consider the location to balance sun exposure and protection from the elements.
  • Avoid overhead branches: Ensure your log store is placed away from any overhanging branches. Rainwater dripping from branches can soak your logs, compromising their dryness and burn quality. After all, there’s no point buying kiln dried logs that are ready for immediate use if they’re only going to get wet again.
  • Keep off the grass: Never dump your logs onto the grass. Logs can absorb moisture from the ground like a sponge, affecting their ability to burn efficiently. Always stack your logs properly in a well-located log store immediately after delivery.
  • Stacking technique: Stack your logs in a crisscross pattern. This method enhances airflow, ensuring your logs remain dry and well-ventilated. Proper stacking also helps prevent the pile from toppling over.
  • Regular Rotation: Rotate your logs periodically. Use the “first in, first out” method to ensure the oldest logs are used first, maintaining the overall quality of your firewood supply.
  • Maintain Cleanliness: Keep the area around your log store clean and free from debris. This not only helps in maintaining good airflow but also reduces the chances of pests making a home in your firewood.
  • Pest Control: Check your log store regularly for signs of pests. If you notice any infestation, take immediate action to prevent damage to your logs. Using natural repellents can be an effective measure.
  • Elevate Individual Logs: For extra protection, consider placing individual logs on small pallets or racks within the store. This further prevents ground moisture from seeping into the logs.

How to check your firewood is dry

To determine if your firewood is dry, look for cracks and splits on the ends, listen for a hollow sound when tapping two logs together, and consider the weight and colour of the wood – which should be lighter than unseasoned wood.

Here’s a more detailed breakdown:
  • Visual Inspection:
    • Cracks and Splits: Seasoned firewood often develops cracks and splits on the ends as it dries and shrinks.
    • Colour: Dry wood tends to have a lighter, grayish colour compared to fresh, green wood, which is typically darker and more vibrant.
    • Bark: The bark on dry wood may be loose and easily chip away, and you might notice bare patches on the logs.
  • Sound Test:
    • Tap Test: Tap two pieces of firewood together. Dry wood will produce a sharp, hollow, ringing sound, while wet wood will make a dull thud.
  • Weight:
    • Lighter: Seasoned wood is significantly lighter than unseasoned wood due to the loss of moisture.
  • Smell:
    • Fading Aroma: Unseasoned wood has a strong, “sappy” aroma, which fades to a light woody smell once the wood is dry.
  • Moisture Meter:
    • Precise Measurement: For a more accurate assessment, use a moisture meter to measure the moisture content of your firewood.
    • Ideal Moisture Content: Seasoned wood should have a moisture content of 20% or lower – making it ready to burn.
